Day 59 Chicken

After a good night we were ready to head on to Chicken. We have heard so many tales about the road we are a little anxious about whats ahead. What we found was fairly decent roads, the last 60+ miles we had lots of steep ascent and descents several were 9 % grade the others 6 or 7.  There were several frost heaves which kept you from driving any speed. We pretty much were under 40 or less the last 60 miles and in a few spots we were doing about 5 mph. You knew you had reached Chicken when the road went totally dirt 2 miles from the town. I am amazed at how many people are here most in high end motor homes.  A little history about Chicken. It was settled by gold prospectors over 100 yrs ago. People still pan and find gold here. There are 25 summer residents and only 7 who stay year round. After Oct 15 the road is not maintained and a small airstrip is available weather permitting. Its a neat town mainly a tourist stop but everyone seems to know about this place. Here are our pics for today. I will show you our road and whats ahead will be worse tomorrow!

All thru Alaska on roads that are bad they use paper plates on stakes for mile markets. They are everywhere on most roads!  Now that is costsavings.
