Day 51 Portage and Whittier

We decided to take an hour long boat ride on a glacier lake to get a close up view of Portage Glacier. It was a nice ride and great sunny weather. They told us Over the weekend they had 70 mile an hour winds and had been rainy and foggy. This area is still part of the rain forest and were told they get 100 feet, not inches, feet of snow every year. They say the glacier grows 500 feet each winter then recedes 525 during summer. I am learning a few things, one I didn't know there was rain forests up here.  After our morning boat ride we rode 2 1/2 miles thru a one way tunnel. The traffic changes every half hour and closes completely when the train uses it!  Other ghan water this is the only access into the town of Whittier. Whittier is a neat little port town. Until we visited the local  musem I didnt realize how much impact WWII had here. Lots of history here particularly military. After some good seafood and a little ice cream we headed back to camp. Still not feeling great either of us so may just enjoy around the campground this evening. I think the plans are to head toward Anchorage tomorrow but may overnight along the beautiful highway to enjoy the scenery. Here are todays photos.  Oh I forgot to mention the population of Whittier is 225.
