It was such an interesting ride across NM, the altitude continued to rise and at one point we reached over 7000 feet. Lots of snow on the ground and wind as we traveled. One of the highlights was seeing antelope out on the range. Miles and miles of land could be seen, it has now turned to red rock with canyons. As we entered into the Albuquerque area, you really started seeing the pueblo style houses. I am really impressed with this city, it is clean and they seem to make everything artwork. The overpasses have lights that are constantly changing color and all the sides of bridges and concrete are painted and have some type of design. We are staying at another retro campground called Enchanted Trails RV Park. This is an awesome park on the west side of the city with easy access to interstate. Although, it was getting dark by the time we got set up we decided to ride into the Old Town section to see a few sights. We ate while we were there at a local place called Garcia's Café. Carvel enjoyed some mexican food, but since I do not like mexican I had grilled cheese and fries 😀
We woke up the next morning and the weather didn't look too great, so we decided it would be a good morning to catch up on some laundry. I didn't realize I could enjoy doing laundry as much as I did here. The campground, which is on historic RT 66 follows the retro theme both inside and out. The laundry room had beautifully restored wringer washer and a old commercial (I believe) dryer, an old hair salon chair with dryer, plus tons of older artifacts hung on the wall.
They also had a great game room in the adjoining room that had pinball machines and a pool table. Of course the décor was all retro! We had a great time passing the time playing pool while our clothes were getting done. Did I mention I beat Carvel, yes I did!
Here are a few pics around the campground of old campers they will rent out during the warmer seasons. The owner of this place has been collecting anything RV for over 30 years. I wish I could show even half of what she has, a marvelous collection. Here you go.
After getting our laundry finished, the weather broke so we decided to return to the Old Town area and see the area in person. In particular there was a church that was build in the 1700's I had to go see. Trust me it was well worth the trip back into town to see it. After spending time admiring this beautiful part of history, we walked around and explored the shops in the area. There were several jewelry makers who displayed their work out on blankets along the sidewalks. Such awesome craftsmen. I know this has to be a thriving area during the warmer season. It is geared toward promoting local artist and many specialty shops and restaurants.
After a great afternoon exploring the Old Town, we headed back toward the campground, but not before a slight detour to the Rt. 66 Casino. Although, not Carvel favorite place to go, he gladly took me to drop a few pennies! I didn't even have to remind him of the World's Largest Stockyard, LOL Had a great time and both of us won a few bucks...woohoo!!
Now with the weather forecast, we are changing our route and heading south tomorrow and around the latest storm coming in...life is a journey.
I sure look forward to coming back to the beautiful city and exploring more of what it has to offer.
